Cedar Door has been crafting timber garage doors since 1987, and being a family-run business located in South Normanton, Derbyshire, Cedar Door garage doors have a focus on timber garage doors exclusively. Cedar Door garage doors contain no steel, aluminum, or composite materials. If you want a timber garage door and want to work with a manufacturer that has a long history crafting high quality timber garage doors, look no farther than Cedar Door.
The Timber
Only the highest quality timber will do, and Cedar Door uses western red cedar (Thuja plicata). Western red cedar makes an excellent door choice since the timber makes doors naturally moisture resistant, and helps the door resist rot and insect infestation. Cedar is also stable, ensuring the door is less likely to warp and become misshapen over time. A cedar garage door with proper maintenance will also outlast a steel garage door.
Cedar Door also makes a commitment to only use kiln dried and fully certified FSC timber. The claim of full chain of custody certification means that the FSC certification can be fully traced, and is a welcome bonus to customers concerned with sustainable purchases and also to planning departments.
Door Construction
The entire construction of Cedar Door uses mortice and tenon joinery. The cedar stiles and rails are cut into shape and assembled with the use of these joints, then glued and wedged. This method of construction is one of the oldest construction techniques and is still effective today. The other option would be to use finger joints and mechanical fasteners on particle board, but, obviously, Cedar Door uses none of this.
The boards in the boarded range consist of tongue and groove cedar boards, which are glued to a solid cedar frame. The panels in the panelled range consist of 9mm pvc coated exterior ply, which may provide a neater finish and improved weather resistance in some conditions when compared to solid panels. They are all hand prepared by artisans prior to the application of full weather protection during the factory finishing process.
Products
There are variations of up and over, side hinged, sectional units and side hinged doors all constructed of cedar. Boarded and panelled styles are present in all ranges. The widths of the doors range from 6ft to 18ft and all are between 5ft 6in and 8ft in height. Dimensions outside of these are also constructed as necessary.
The side hinged doors all fall within a 6ft to 10ft width range and have multiple options for ironmongery.
Wicket doors are featured in select models. This is a favorable feature for garages that are also workshops or utility spaces requiring frequent pedestrian access.
Something to Note About the Industry
Cedar Door produces timber garage doors for both Hörmann and Garador in the UK. If you have a timber garage door from Hörmann or Garador, you have a door made by Cedar Door. This is not common knowledge, and it illustrates where Cedar Door sits in the marketplace as a specialist the bigger companies need for timber.
The Finish and Upkeep
Doors are fully finished when they leave the factory, but Cedar is a living material and reacts to weather and sunlight. A treatment schedule of cleaning, re-coating, and sealing the bottom edge will significantly extend the longevity of a Cedar door. Cedar Door and most installers recommend an exterior topcoat of Sikkens for regular upkeep, regardless if it’s applied to the inner face. Leaving the inner face bare is the most common reason for the early warping.
Who Cedar Door Caters To
Cedar Door is a great option for conservation areas and period properties, and anywhere else a door needs to blend into the building. Doors like GRP or steel can look fine from a distance, but not from a close view. When a close view distinction matters, the choice is easy.
